Dr. Heidi Horsley is an internationally known grief expert and Licensed Psychologist and Social Worker, who has worked in the field of grief and loss for almost 20 years.  Dr. Heidi is Co-Founder and Executive Director for the Open to Hope Foundation and co-host of Open to Hope Radio,  www.opentohope.com.  The most comprehensive internet based grief site in the world, with over 300 contributors, 3,000 articles, and 400 radio shows, Open to Hope is committed to providing hope and resources to grieving individuals after loss.  Open to Hope serves over 2 million annual visitors, with 50,000 radio listeners. 

Dr. Heidi is an Adjunct Professor at Columbia University, and has taught courses on grief and loss, and clinical practice with children for nearly ten years.  For nine years she was on a clinical research team with the FDNY-Columbia University Family Guidance Program studying traumatic loss over time in families who lost firefighters in the World Trade Center.   This was the most comprehensive study ever done on 9/11 families.  In recognition of her contributions in the grief and loss field, she received the Soaring Spirits Service Award in 2011, by the Soaring Spirits Loss Foundation, and the Healing Hand Award, by the Billy Esposito Foundation in 2010.  These awards represented all the work that she and her organization, Open to Hope www.opentohope.com do to help grieving individuals find hope after loss.

Dr. Heidi serves on the National Board of Directors for The Compassionate Friends, the largest bereavement organization in the world.  She is also on the National Advisory Board for the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS).  TAPS has served over 35,000 military families who have suffered a loss. 
In addition, she is on the National Advisory Board for Our Conservatory, a music program for at risk kids in Los Angeles.  Dr. Heidi writes an advice column for The Compassionate Friends We Need Not Walk Alone Magazine and appears in the Marquis Whose Who in America, Madison Whose Who, and Whose Who of American Women. 

Dr. Heidi has published 4 books, including; Open to Hope: Inspirational Stories for Handling the Holidays After Loss (Open to Hope Foundation, 2011); Open to Hope: Inspirational Stories of Healing After Loss (Open to Hope Foundation, 2011); Real Men Do Cry; A Quarterbacks Inspiring Story of Tackling Depression & Surviving Suicide Loss (Quality of Life Publishing, 2008); and Teen Grief Relief: Parenting with Understanding Support and Guidance (Rainbow Books, 2007).  She has appeared on the ABC television show 20/20, as well as other media outlets, and has been on hundreds of radio shows as well as quoted in dozens of media publications, including: the Metro World News, Washington Post, Time Magazine, and New York Daily News.
  Dr. Heidi is also the author of numerous articles and book chapters.  She is currently working on her next book, Open to Hope: Inspirational Stories of Handling the Death of a Spouse, to be released in April, 2012. 

Dr. Heidi's early career included work in a variety of clinical settings, including Manhattan Psychiatric Center, California Pacific Medical Center Psychiatry Dept., University of San Francisco Mental Health Clinic, St. Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital Psychiatry Dept., and Hope Haven Residential Treatment Center in New Orleans.

Dr. Heidi gives keynotes, presentations and workshops throughout the country, and teaches continuing education workshops for health care professionals on the psychological treatment of loss.  Her academic credentials include a doctorate in psychology (PsyD) from the University of San Francisco; and a masters degree in social work (LMSW) from Columbia University, and in mental health counseling (MS) from Loyola University in New Orleans.
